Get A Grip, Man!

McIlheran, in one of his Quick Hits, in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, had this to say:

A school in Middleton is treating its seventh-graders to a field trip to "The Golden Compass." The author of the book on which the movie's based explained it by saying, "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." The Middleton kids may need a treat, but were there no other possible field trips? A teacher organizing the trip said the book's quite popular. So are shoot-'em-up videogames, but they aren't a school's business. Neither is undermining the basis of Christian belief.
For crying out loud, Patrick, it's just a movie! There is no nefarious plot to make the world full of atheists. Get a grip, man!

And the Harry Potter series were just books! It was not a plot to make the world full of Wiccans.
I would not be surprised one bit if McIlheran was one of those people that read more into this song as well:

  1. I forgot how much I liked that song. Perfect choice for this subject.
I wonder how many people now complaining about HP and the Golden Compass used to sing it themselves?
