A politician gets pilloried for attending a political event held within his own party because it's a waste of city dollars and a mayor should never attend purely political events.

A politician gets pilloried for NOT attending a political event not held by his own party because he's not showing proper respect or being a good host.

There is no way to get past the wind and noise. Not much sense to try to make the unhappy people happy.
